Cavill to return as Superman in Shazam 2.

Henry Cavill in talks to return as Superman in the upcoming Shazam sequel.

A Mikey Sutton Scoop

The following is a Lords of the Longbox exclusive.

Admittedly, I was skeptical of Henry Cavill returning to DC Films after Justice League tanked at the box office and the resulting volcanic ash that circled it, with Zack Snyder getting booted and Ben Affleck hanging up his cape. WB heads had given up on the Man of Steel, even clearing Greg Berlanti to do his own version of him for TV, which was a shocking move at the time. So what’s going on?

I am hearing that the Rock, Black Adam himself, truly wants a cohesive DC film universe, and he’s been a Cavill cheerleader. WB placed the misfiring of the DCEU partly on Cavill as his Superman didn’t light the box office on fire like he should have, especially in comparison to what Kevin Feige has done with Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor with the Marvelous Competition. But Cavill is a charismatic, heroic figure who just wasn’t written and directed properly.

I’ve been told that Cavill is in talks to return as Superman for Shazam 2. However, It won’t be a huge role. Discussions have been for Superman to fight the Big Red Cheese in an epic scene that finds the Kryptonian under the control of Mister Mind. Will this come to pass? It depends on contract negotiations. Cavill has gotten a second wind lately with the popularity of The Witcher on Netflix. Cavill in Shazam 2 could give Superman a new path in the DCEU.

And, oh, by the way, Cavill as Wolverine is still bullshit. But keep in mind that, if Cavill decides to resurrect his Superman role, kiss any hope of him ending up at Marvel Studios. They do want him there, too — just not as Logan, bub.

Your fly in the ointment,
